Holiday Recycling Tips

The holidays (especially the gift giving ones) can generate a lot of waste and recycling. From food scraps (which are compostable) to tinsel (which is reusable), we find ourselves faced with a flurry of choices about how to keep this time of year merry and green.

Here are some tips on how to make your holiday recycling stress free:

  • Old but still functional decorations can be donated, rather than disposed of.

  • Old string lights can be disposed of in the trash, or recycled at some hardware stores, but should never be placed in the recycling bin.

  • Food scraps can be saved and composted at drop-off locations.

  • Live Christmas trees can be stripped of ornaments and placed out for collection, or brought to special collection sites, so the city can turn them into mulch.

  • When opening gifts, have a garbage bag and a recycling bag handy – that way, you can unwrap your gifts and clean up the mess as you go!

  • Use this handy guide to identify the best ways to reduce, reuse, and recycle!
